BOOK REVIEW: The 100 by Kass Morgan

author: Kass Morgan
title: The 100

publication date: September 3rd, 2013

Ever since a devastating nuclear war, humanity has lived on spaceships far above Earth’s radioactive surface. Now, one hundred juvenile delinquents — considered expendable by society — are being sent on a dangerous mission: to recolonize the planet. It could be their second chance at life…or it could be a suicide mission.

Clarke was arrested for treason, though she’s haunted by the memory of what she really did. Wells, the chancellor’s son, came to Earth for the girl he loves — but will she ever forgive him? Reckless Bellamy fought his way onto the transport pod to protect his sister, the other half of the only pair of siblings in the universe. And Glass managed to escape back onto the ship, only to find that life there is just as dangerous as she feared it would be on Earth.

Confronted with a savage land and haunted by secrets from their pasts, the hundred must fight to survive. They were never meant to be heroes, but they may be mankind’s last hope.

Ok so maybe watching the tv show before reading the book was a mistake. Maybe, if I had read the book before I watched the show I would have liked the book much better. However, I watched the show first and well, without being mean: the show is much better than this book.

THERE MIGHT ME SOME MINOR SPOILERS

The book is just so different than the show, half of the characters, that appear in the show do not exist in the book. To be honest, most of the book characters really annoyed me. Like Wells to begin with. He is the most selfish person ever and goes on and on and on about how everything he did and does was for Clarke. He thinks that his love for Clarke is all that matters so he cares for nothing but her. Even though it’s kind of cute that he is so much in love with her it doesn’t mean that because of that he can risk the lives of the whole human population. I also didn’t like Clarke that much. Also Bellamy acted like a total asshole sometimes and Octavia, who’s my favorite character on the show, maybe even my favorite female character ever, is just a little child in the book. I mean I might even say that I liked her best out of all those dumb characters and still I couldn’t really relate to her.

But I really liked Glass and her POV throughout the whole story. She and Luke were like the characters I liked best. They are so cute together and reading their story up in space was the most interesting and fun part of the whole book, even though it seemed a little emotionless to me, the whole thing that happend to her I mean. If you’ve read the book you probably know what I’m talking about.

Before I actutally read the book I’ve talked to some bookstagrammers and they all already said that the show is much better than the book but that if I ship Clarke and Bellamy I would like the book. So I really hoped for some romance here but all I got was a freaking annoying love triangle. Like really? Why do all YA books have to consist of a dumb love triangle? I mean I am not the biggest fan of the tv show-Clarke either, it’s a little bit of a love-hate relationship between us. Sometimes I really like her, sometimes I just wish she would have stayed up in space, but I really really like Bellamy. Awww man yes how much I like him on the show but in the book he’s just a stupid idiot. He isn’t the strong leader that we know in the show, he’s only someone in the background who is taking care of his baby sister as good as he can. Also I think that his and Octavias whole history is much more interesting and intense in the tv show than it is in the book. And then there is also Octavias drug problem. Like really? This just came out of nowhere. She’s like what? 14? Also if she really was a drug addict wouldn’t she be showing signs of withdrawals? At least some?

But besides all the things I didn’t like there were some things I actually liked. Like Glass and Lukes relationship or to see how the relationship between Clarke and Bellamy slowly started to grow. But I’m not sure if I want to read the next book in the series. I might some time in the future. I am obsessed with the show and hoped so much that I’d like the books but unfortunately the book is rather disappointing.

The story has so much potential and it’s just so sad that it wasn’t as good as I’ve expected. But at least we have the tv show.
